Renewal of ‘Avatar: The Last Airbender’: Triumph or Controversy?
The Avatar’s journey continues with Netflix announcing a renewal for two more seasons of the live-action adaptation of “Avatar: The Last Airbender.” As a result of its popularity on Netflix’s streaming service, the show will continue with seasons 2 and 3. Although the exact episode count remains undisclosed, Netflix assures fans that showrunner Albert Kim and his team have enough material to cover the entirety of the original Nickelodeon animated series, which ran for three seasons. Premiering on Netflix on February 22, the live-action adaptation received various reactions from fans. However, it quickly gained popularity, becoming Netflix’s top English-language TV project. Within just 11 days, it amassed an impressive 41.1 million views, cementing its status as a significant cultural phenomenon in the streaming world.

In Season 1, the series delved into the storyline of Book One: Water, mirroring the initial season of Nickelodeon’s Avatar: The Last Airbender. The narrative unfolds in a feudal realm inhabited by benders, individuals capable of manipulating one of the four natural elements. Cormier portrays Ang, the successor to the Avatar, a reincarnated entity entrusted with mastering water, earth, fire, and air to uphold harmony in the world. However, Ang, a young airbender from the Southern Air Temple, evades his duties and becomes ensnared in a storm, remaining frozen in ice for a century. His absence allows the Fire Nation to annihilate the Air Nomads and launch a campaign for global supremacy.
Kiawentiio portrays Katara, a young waterbender from the Southern Water Tribe, who joins Ang upon his awakening to embark on a quest for world peace. Ousley takes on the role of Sokka, Katara’s brother, while Liu embodies Zuko, the exiled prince of the Fire Nation determined to capture the Avatar and redeem his honor. It’s already been revealed that there will be a time jump between Seasons 1 and 2. Kim explained in a previous interview with EW that adjustments were necessary to accommodate the aging of the young cast on screen. Cormier, who auditioned for Ang at 11 years old, is now 14, and Kiawentiio, who joined the show at 14, is now 17, among others. Kim elaborated, stating, “All three seasons of the animated series essentially take place in the course of one calendar year. It wasn’t feasible to follow that exact timeline. Thus, we had to plan the first season with the understanding that there might be a gap between it and the second season.
Daniel Dae Kim, who portrays Fire Lord Ozai, playfully teased the series’ cast during the announcement. Connecting via video chat with actors Gordon Cormier, Kiawentiio, Ian Ousley, Dallas Liu, Elizabeth Yu, and Paul Sun-Hyung Lee, Kim jokingly suggested that they had received negative news before ultimately revealing the positive announcement.
